Get to know Rick O’Shea
Its all Rugby Mate!
It has been said that Rick has the perfect face for radio and yet despite this obvious handicap, over the last decade Rick has established himself as integral part of BBC Wales’ Rugby Flagship Scrum V & also hosts the weekly rugby show on BBC Radio Wales.
His versatility as a freelance journalist sees him feature with the likes of SKY Sports, Sunset & Vine, RTE, TalkSport!

Rick comes from good Welsh stock. His father John played for Cardiff, Wales, and remains the first and only British Lion to be sent off! Rick grew up in Cornwall which like Wales boasts a proud tradition of Rugby and Rick learned the game with the “Pirates” of Penzance & Newlyn.!
Rick returned to Wales to continue his education at what was South Glamorgan Institute or Cardiff Metropolitan in new money. He arrived as a scrum half but left as prop, one of his many stories worth hearing!
Whilst at Cyncoed he earned Welsh Student caps in both Union & League, before returning to Cornwall to play for the Pirates.

His shoulder however was dodgier than his scrummaging and when injury forced him to pack up playing Rick offered his services to Radio Cornwall as a freelance rugby correspondent laying the foundations for the parallel career as a broadcaster.
Never one for convention, in 2008 he began a Post Graduate Medicine Degree at Swansea University. He qualified in 2012 and is now on The GP Training Scheme in The Glamorgan Valleys.

After Dinner Speaking

As his profile has continued to rise Rick has become increasingly sought after as an after dinner speaker and a Master of Ceremonies. It would be fair to describe Rick as a social animal, equally adept in a small Rugby club as he is hosting a 600 cover corporate event at Twickenham.

Having been on the circuit for ten years the list of venues at which Rick has been invited would not fit in this space, but once again Rick’s versatility makes him a great choice for all genres of events that are looking for some good natured fun.
But….just to give you an idea…..Rick has worked for all The Welsh Rugby Regions, Gloucester RFC, Surrey RFU.
He has hosted events for The Blues Lions, Testimonial Dinners for Adam Jones of The Ospreys & Mark Wallace of Glamorgan Cricket Club…..

Velindre Cancer Trust dinner at Parc Y Scarlets

Very proud to have shared the stage with the Worlds best referee Nigel Owens at PYS last week.

The event was organised by Trimsaran RFC and was well attended on a beautiful evening where they raised over £3000 for this remarkable charity, whose president is their favourite son Johnathan Jiffy Davies…….. I met his Mam, what a lovely lady.

Perfect face for radio……

Last seasons Friday night radio show on BBC Radio Wales was great fun & I am delighted to say that after a summer of fun following Glamorgan in the T20 we’ll be back at the end of August in a new time slot on a Thursday evening.

I’m really excited about this because it means we are no longer clashing with the live game on the Friday night. This means that my regular guests like Gareth llewellyn, Sean Holley, Martin Williams et al can really get stuck in to the issues of the week……. and lets face it, this is Welsh Rugby, there are always plenty of issues.

Also my co presenter (gimp) Paul Williams (Wales’ seventh best dressed man 2013) can keep us up to date with all the matters of the egg from around the world.

First show is on the 28th August….. Don’t miss it!!

BBC Radio Wales

As everyone that know me will be aware that I have a passion for Radio, which I am fortunate to exercise on the BBC Radio Wales Scrum V show. This week we presented the show live at the Mochyn Dy in Sofia Gardens.

filling two hours of live air time is easy when you are sat with Gwyn Jones, Gareth Charles, & Gareth Davies. Topic of discussion was Wales Autumn series, predictions of a narrow defeat for Wales I made, and unfortunately they delivered.

Catch me on my radio show every Friday from 7 till 9pm.

An evening with Buck Shelford at Tumbler RFC

I had the privilege yesterday to be the guest speaker supporting the legend that is All Blacks Captain Wayne Shelford. The location was a packed house in Tumble RFC. After telling some of my stories & enjoying a few of his tales we moved onto the important bit….The auction. We were raising money for the future of the club in the hope that it will nurture it up coming talent.

Worthington Wednesday

A Molsen Coors Worthington Wednesday is my latest endevaour Hosted by Pencoed RFC guests tucked into a feast of hot chicken curry & half & half. Spot on it was too.
I shared the spotlight in a Q&A panel with former RBS 6 Nations 2012 player of the tournament & Lions player Dan Lydiate, oh and the World’s best referee Nigel Owens.
A special guest experience was made by my dad telling the tale of the ‘The Battle Of The Springs’ in South Africa whereupon he became the only British Lion to be sent off. I am now happy to report that his temper has mellowed considerably over the years.
The audience asked some great questions, it was a truly fantastic evening.
